ONE IS BETTER GLASSES OR CONTACT LENSES?
Which
one is better eye glasses or contact lens? Glasses or also called spectacles
frames-bearing lenses that people wearing in front of their eyes to correct
vision problem such as hyperopia (far-sightedness), myopia (near-sightedness),
astigmatism (corneal distortion), and presbyopia which is the inability of the eyes
to focus up close due to hardening of natural lens (Lucile Packard Children’s
Hospital, 2012). Whereby, people should know the difference between the cost of
wearing glasses and contact lens the risk of getting eye infection between
glasses and the comfort between glasses or contact lens.
One
of the differences between glasses and contact lenses is in terms of the cost
between glasses and contact lenses. Most people are aware that contact lenses
are usually more expensive than glasses. This is supported by Downey (n.d) that,
consumers will spend a lot of money to buy contact lenses compared to normal
glasses. Glasses can be use in a longer period of time compared to contact
lenses because glasses are usually elongated than contact lenses (Downey, n.d).
This is the reason why glasses is cheaper than contact lenses. As for, contact
lenses, they are is more expensive compared to glasses because of the
accessories required. Hannah (2008) stated that, a user need to spend lots of
money to buy contact lenses accessories such as solution to clean the lenses,
the storage to keep the lens and so on.
Another difference
factor is the risk of eye infection between glasses and contact lenses.
Consumers have high potential to get bacteria into the eyes. According to Downey
(n.d), environment is the main factor that introduces bacteria to the eyes. For
examples wearing lenses can decreased corneal sensitivity, corneal ulcers,
distortion of cornea, and decreased corneal oxygenation (Downey, n.d). Apart
from that, when a user does not comply with the proper lenses care such as by
using tap water to clean the lenses. It can lead to itchiness. Therefore, must
wash hand firstly before wearing the lenses to avoid from bacteria infection (Knowlton, n.d).
Downey
(n.d) also stated that, some of the consumers do not use the right solution to
clean the lenses. Besides, some users tend to buy lenses at night market and do
not get consultation from optometrist to use lenses. This will damage the eyes
and also cause blind. A prescription from doctor regarding contact lenses should
be followed accordingly. It is important for users to pay attention to the
expiry date and recommended use period for contact lenses. If users are unsure
of either of these, consultation from optometrist before purchasing contact
lenses (Barker, 2010). Contact lenses
storage case need to be replace every three months to six months (Daily
News,2009). It is because to avoid from bacteria inflection (Daily News,2009). So, user must always carefully when use the
lenses and alert about the expiry date to avoid from bacteria inflection and
also indirectly can make damage the eyes.
Besides,
discomfort to the eyes is also the difference factor between glasses and
contact lenses. Contact lenses more discomfort than glasses and can happened
for some reasons. If the lenses do not fit the eyes, the eyes will become
itchy, allergic, red and watery. It is supported by Downey (n.d), those who are
wearing contact lenses will feel uncomfortable and sensitive at the eyes if the
lenses do not fit the eyes properly. Touching or putting something in the eyes
can make consumers become less comfortable
when wearing contact lenses (Downey, n.d).
In
addition, Knowlton, (n.d) stated that, it is important to use a good lubricant
solution for contact lenses. For users that have allergy or eye infection, can get
the eyes to be in pain and get worse when consumers use contact lenses (Knowlton,
n.d). According to Daily News (2009)
contact lenses can be divided into two types which are soft and hard contact
lenses. Hard contact lenses is called RGP (rigid gas-permeable) which made of
hard plastic. But, this types of contact lenses is not suitable because as
mentioned by Haila (2012), hard contact lenses is less comfortable to wear
because there will be no air passage. Soft contact lenses contain a higher
concentration of water that can stay in the eye for longer period of time. So, glasses is more comfortable to wear
when doing outdoor activities such as sport. It is because not all activities
can use contact lenses sport such as swimming.
In
conclusion, glasses is better than contact lenses because wearing glasses is
more comfortable than contact lenses. Besides, glasses is less risk to cause
eye infection when wearing it compared to contact lenses. According to Daily
News (2009), the risk of eye problem is high when users use contact lenses
without consulting an optometrist. In addition, glasses are cheaper than
contact lenses. People should know which one is better, either glasses or
contact lenses. It shows that glasses is more suitable for people to use. Moreover,
wearing glasses actually cannot harm people vision compared to contact lenses.
This is because, glasses is more safe and able to use.
